Finished Concept Work

This is a collection of my finished concept art pieces. Finally done and submitted! Overall I'm fairly pleased, there are a few things I would change if I were to do it again, such as lessening the lean towards the Japanese side of things because it has become fairly dominant over the entire module. Maybe try and combine it a lot more with other things. I'm pretty pleased with the layout, and I think it's fairly well presented. I'm not sure about the logo but it seems to work well on the images so I think that's quite good.

Collection of Development Work

This is a collection of some of my development work that didn't make it into the final document.

Magnificent Ship, Exterior

As I mentioned, this particular design is based on a dragon. The wings signify sails, and the fact that this ship could possibly be powered by magic as well as manpower, judging by the oars attached to the ship. The dragon at the front is very distinctive, I tried to give it a wooden appearance as well as a curved branch-like appearance, much like cherry blossom roots.

Non-Humanoid Priest

I was really stuck for what to do with this, but I decided to do a preyingmantis, because it's the priest! This character was cursed by the evil princess, and is sent to look after the church, as pictured. It was really good for me to draw something different, I've never done a non-humanoid character before so it puts a really interesting slant on things. Because of Japan's climate, a lot of bugs are much larger than their western counterparts, so I thought that making the non-humanoid at least somewhat bug-like would be the best idea, and this is where the original idea came from.

Magnificent Church

This is going back to traditional roots, very traditionally church-like. I really should have done something more original with this, but most things I've done so far have been too on the Japanese side, so I decided to add this in as a contrast to that. I quite like how the stained glass turned out, and again I added the cherry blossom tree as is featured in most areas of my concept artwork. It's quite different to my original design, but I'm pretty pleased with the outcome.

Mundane Props

I originally designed the lantern quite a while ago, it is influenced by victorian elements. I made the cup like a tankard with a Japanese handle, and the chopsticks are simple and mass produced. These are all things from the village, as such they are a little bit battered/broken because it has been devastated. I made sure to reflect similar designs in all the objects to suggest they've been manufactured by the same company and have an identifying theme.

Devastated Village Design

This is my village environment. I had to make drastic changes to this particular design, because the buildings were originally distinctly Japanese, and because of the reason Japanese tsunami disaster I thought it would be inappropriate to design the environment in this way, the damage was also changed to fire damage. It's quick little speedpaint, I wanted the 'painted' look still so I made sure it still had that feel to it.

Heaven Environment Design

This is my heaven environment. This is the first design I did, and it's been finished a while, I was just trying to work out how to layout the page for environments. I decided to cut out the description and let it speak for itself here, with detail shots down the right hand side. This is still one of the favourite things I've done as I think the composition is good and it says a lot about the place. I think the only thing missing is the sense of scale which I'll add in before submitting it.

Nameless Angel

I like how this turned out, because of the flowing robe/dress. This character is a little different to the others but I wanted to use a different colour scheme to represent something that is unattached to the real world, while retaining the same paint style to tie it in with the existing themes. It's actually a lot different from what I originally planned, it was going to be red and gold, but having done the heaven scene first it meant the character was influenced by the environment and visa versa.

'Higasa' Parasol.

This is the Princess's primary weapon. The design is simple, and contains the motif that is found on all items I've designed, the cherry blossoms. It is magical, so therefore doesn't look very intimidating on it's own. Unlike the fans, there is only one of these and it will only work in the descendants of the Royal Family's possession.
